Business travel by train is increasing at VR Snabbtåg. In 2025, business travelers accounted for 15 percent of trips on the Stockholm-Gothenburg route – the highest proportion to date. The increase is explained by companies increasingly choosing not to fly domestically for climate reasons, while business travel is gradually recovering after the pandemic years.

VR Snabbtåg sees a clear change in how companies and organizations choose to travel for work. Today, many employers prioritize trains over flights in their travel policies for domestic travel.

“The train has become the first choice for many who travel for work between Stockholm and Gothenburg,” says Thérèse Lorenius, Business Director at VR Snabbtåg. It is both about climate responsibility and efficient travel time. Many feel that they get a lot done on board during the approximately three and a half hour journey.

The development is particularly noticeable on departures that traditionally attract business travelers, such as early morning trains and late afternoon trips, where the proportion of business trips has increased the most.

“Another driving force behind the development may be that physical meetings seem to be increasing again after the pandemic, even though working life is more digital than before,” says Thérèse Lorenius. The balance between digital and physical meetings is still changing and affecting travel needs.

VR Snabbtåg operates the Stockholm-Gothenburg route with several daily departures and has developed its offering for business travelers in recent years. This includes advantageous corporate agreements, season and clip cards, and ticket types with extra service, such as a guaranteed vacant seat next to you. VR is also the only express train on the route that is powered entirely by renewable electricity, and business customers have access to emissions statistics for their travel.
