Growth continues at Copenhagen Airport, where 3.1 million passengers passed through the terminals in May. More passengers from all over Denmark are flying via Copenhagen and continuing out into the world from Copenhagen Airport.
Summer traffic has gotten off to a good start at Copenhagen Airport. In May, the number of passengers increased by seven percent and reached 3.1 million, the highest number ever for May.
”The global appetite for travel remains high despite rising fuel prices, and several days in May were on par with the biggest travel days at the airport last summer,” says Peter Krogsgaard, commercial director at Copenhagen Airport.
Traffic is driven by developments on European routes. Norway tops the list as the most popular country with 259,000 passengers, while to the south Italy, which with 231,000 passengers has the largest increase. On the routes between Copenhagen and the 12 Italian destinations, there were 36,000 more passengers in May, which is an increase of 18 percent compared to last year.
Significantly more domestic travelers
Growth is also occurring on the Danish routes. During the first five months of the year, 590,000 passengers traveled on the six domestic routes to and from Copenhagen Airport. This is 108,000 more than last year, which corresponds to an increase of 22 percent.
”"It has become easier to fly between the country's regions. Airlines have added more flights on the routes to Aalborg and Aarhus, and the routes to Billund and Karup in Central Jutland have been reopened. Good air connections are crucial for mobility in Denmark, both for holidaymakers and business travellers," says Peter Krogsgaard.
The growth is partly due to Copenhagen Airport increasingly serving as an international hub for travel further afield. The share of transfer passengers on domestic routes has increased by over five percentage points compared to last year.
”"Copenhagen Airport is the international airport for all of Denmark. More travelers from Western Denmark fly via Copenhagen, and today four out of ten domestic passengers are in a transfer and continue their journey on one of the 330 routes from Copenhagen this summer," says Peter Krogsgaard.
