The holiday paradise of Mallorca in Spain attracts millions of tourists every year. But now the locals are resisting. There were 30,000 demonstrators protesting against mass tourism in Palma, British reports Underground. They are strongly critical of tourists driving up housing prices so that residents cannot afford them themselves.

In a statement, the organization behind the protest wrote that the government is prioritizing tourism while "the resident population is suffering from an unprecedented housing crisis and a progressive deterioration of living conditions.".

”We refuse to be driven off our own island”, the statement continues.

Last year, 13 million tourists visited the Balearic Islands.
