Swedish passport ranks highest in the EU – US loses ground

The Swedish passport is the highest ranked in the EU for visa-free travel, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. Meanwhile, the American passport continues to fall in the global rankings.

In 2006, the United States shared first place with Denmark and Finland, but today 36 countries are ahead of the American passport in terms of access to visa-free destinations.

Sweden tops the EU rankings and Swedish citizens are not affected by the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES), which applies to travelers from countries outside the union. The system involves registering biometric data upon entry into the Schengen area and has, according to several reports, led to longer waiting times at some European airports.

At the same time, it has become easier to travel across one of Europe's most contentious borders. Earlier in July, the physical border fence between Gibraltar and Spain was removed after the EU and the UK reached a historic agreement on the British territory's future border management.

The agreement is expected to facilitate mobility for both residents and visitors to Gibraltar, which is located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.
