A small plane with 13 people on board crashed on Saturday in the province of Nasca in southern Peru, international media reports.Everyone on board perished.

The plane crashed while flying over the Nazca Lines, a popular archaeological tourist attraction in southern Peru. They are ancient works of art carved into the ground and attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, who usually view them from small planes flying over the site.

Crashed shortly after takeoff

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport in Pisco, about 240 kilometers south of the Peruvian capital Lima. It belonged to the local Peruvian airline Aerodiana. 

– Eleven passengers and two crew members have died. The accident was so severe that there are no survivors. We have found four bodies so far, says police chief Jorge Andrade to media at the scene of the accident.

2,000-year-old artwork

He gave no information about what might have caused the accident. Peru's aviation authority is investigating the crash.

The Nazca Lines, also known as geoglyphs, are around 50,000 works of art carved into the ground in the Nazca Desert. They were created by the Nazca people 2,000 years ago.
