The bustling Tokyo area of Shinjuku is cracking down on short-term rental housing.

According to a local official, over half of all homes rented to tourists, including via Airbnb, will no longer be allowed to be rented out under new rules that will be announced shortly.

Shinjuku, known as the administrative and commercial heart of the Japanese capital, welcomes tens of thousands of tourists annually.

The new regulations are being introduced after a growing number of complaints about visitors, who are accused of mishandling garbage, smoking where they are not allowed and being too loud.

Kyoto is also reported to be considering similar measures. In 2025, Japan was visited by a record number of tourists: 42.7 million.
