Alphabet-owned Waymo, together with Japanese taxi service GO and operator Nihon Kotsu, plans to launch Japan's first fully driverless robotaxi service in Tokyo in 2027.
The launch is dependent on regulatory approvals and continued testing of the technology, according to a statement from the companies. Seekingalpha reports.
The service will begin with a smaller fleet of vehicles, which will then gradually be expanded to around 100 vehicles in central parts of Tokyo.
Waymo began collecting road data in Tokyo last year as a first step in the company's international expansion. When the service launches, trips will be booked through both GO and Waymo's apps.
