The tourism industry in Dalarna had a strong July. The number of commercial guest nights increased by 5.4 percent compared to last year to just over 751,000. This was slightly better than the development for Sweden as a whole.

A total of 751,161 commercial guest nights were registered in Dalarna during July 2026, according to accommodation statistics from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development. This was 38,438 more than in the same month in 2025.

The increase of 5.4 percent can be compared with 5.3 percent for all of Sweden.

– July is one of the most important months of the year for the tourism industry and therefore it is gratifying to see that Dalarna continues to attract both Swedish and international visitors, says Johanna Hemming, CEO of Visit Dalarna.

Dalarna was Sweden's sixth largest visitor county in terms of the number of commercial guest nights during the month.

Foreign guest nights increased by 8.9 percent

Swedish guest nights increased by 4.5 percent to 581,924. This was stronger than the national average increase of 3.2 percent.

International demand also continued to rise. Foreign guest nights increased by 8.9 percent to 162,973.

Norway remains Dalarna's largest foreign market by far, accounting for nearly 55 percent of international guest nights. During July, Norwegian overnight stays increased by 13 percent.

Denmark increased by 7.4 percent and Germany by 5.4 percent, while the Netherlands was largely unchanged with an increase of 0.2 percent.

Camping accounts for more than half

Camping is the dominant commercial form of accommodation during the summer and accounted for 55 percent of Dalarna's guest nights. The number of camping nights increased by 6 percent, compared to 3.9 percent nationwide.

Holiday villages had the strongest development with an increase of 14.6 percent, twice as much as the national average of 7.4 percent.

Hotels, on the other hand, performed weaker. Hotel nights in Dalarna increased by 1.2 percent, compared to 7.8 percent in Sweden as a whole.

– We see that Dalarna continues to be attractive for our prioritized foreign markets. It is important for the tourism industry and contributes to strong development during the summer season, says Johanna Hemming.

Visit Dalarna also emphasizes that the statistics for the entire summer season are not yet complete. A comprehensive picture can only be made when the figures for August have also been published.
