This is shown by the preliminary data received by the Swedish Transport Agency on May 15, 2018. This is the same number of fatalities compared to April 2017.

Almost half of the fatalities were unprotected road users (two on motorcycles, two on bicycles, two were pedestrians and one was other). 10 of the fatalities had been travelling in a passenger car. Four motorists died in single-vehicle accidents, three motorists died in head-on collisions and of the unprotected road users, five had been hit by motor vehicles.

– So far this year we have had 8 more fatalities compared to the same period last year. The largest increase is among car drivers, who have increased by 42 percent (37 fatalities in 2018 compared to 26 fatalities in 2017). To reach the target of 220 fatalities in two years, we need to do more to save more people, says Khabat Amin, statistician at Road and Railways at the Swedish Transport Agency.

The average number of fatalities in the month of April, over the previous four years 2014-2017, is 18 people.

During both the last 12 months (March 2017-April 2018) and the last 12 months (March 2016-April 2017), 261 people died. Compared to a 4-year average for the corresponding previous 12-month periods, the number of deaths has decreased by two percent.

Due to a major drop in police reporting of accidents with serious and minor injuries from 2013 onwards, the number of seriously injured people is not commented on.
