The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is warning that 2,000 Boeing aircraft may have safety issues. The issues concern air valves on the engines, which are at risk of corroding while the planes have been in storage when air traffic has been low due to the pandemic.

The FAA is now requiring all Boeing 737 NG and Classic aircraft that have not been flown in seven days to be inspected before use. If rust problems are found, the valves must be replaced, the FAA says. The requirement comes after four reports of engine problems that were caused by rusted air valves stuck open instead of closed.

Boeing confirms that the valves are more susceptible to corrosion when they have not been used for a long time. The company is urging all operators of the affected aircraft to inspect their planes, and is offering assistance if any problems are found.
