2017 was a strong year for tourism in Sweden.

The publication Facts about Swedish tourism 2017 is now complete.

Here are statistics about the importance of tourism for the Swedish economy.

Last year, tourism turnover increased by 7.4 percent to a total of SEK 317 billion compared to the previous year. This is the strongest increase since 2006.

Tourism is growing in line with the Swedish economy as a whole, but shows a stronger development in terms of exports and employment. In 2017, the export value of tourism (consumption by foreign visitors in Sweden) grew by 11.4 percent to a total of SEK 134 billion.

Of the total consumption expenditure of 317 billion SEK by tourists, foreign visitors accounted for 42 percent. This share has increased steadily during the 2000s. In 2000, the share was 27 percent.

Tourism also creates new jobs. The number of people employed as a result of tourism increased by almost 10,600 people to 175,800.
