Since construction began last year, passersby have been able to watch a new meeting place for the entire city and region emerge. Here in the new district, Centralstaden, the goal is for more people to be able to live, work and live sustainably. Now Jernhusen is developing the place with solutions that meet the needs of the future and make it easier for more people to travel by train.  

The delivery of the 524,000 bricks that will be laid soon began. The brick, which was recycled from three different buildings in Denmark, is now getting a new life here. In addition to 100 percent recycled brick, it goes without saying that the climate footprint of other materials is kept as low as possible. As in the case of the roof, where the choice of recycled and partly fossil-free steel contributes to a large climate saving for the entire construction project. 

– Milestones are always worth celebrating, says Jonas Karlge, project manager Jernhusen. When we simultaneously reach our ambitious sustainability goals, there is twice as much to be happy about. Being part of this important development and delivery to our city, business and travelers is something that we and everyone involved feel great pride in.  

– Gothenburg Grand Central is a fantastic project and it feels exciting that we have now reached one of many important milestones when the roof begins to be installed. The project has a clear focus on sustainability, where the choice of materials with a low climate footprint plays a crucial role. We want to lead the industry's transformation and we are now doing so together with Jernhusen, says Magnus Wedholm, Project Director at Peab.  

Project facts:  

• The savings compared to using virgin steel in the roof frame is 239 tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalents). 
• The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and the offices will be occupied in spring 2027. 
• The new station building is being built together with the Nils Ericson Terminal and thus with the existing central station. The building is primarily a station building but houses three upper office floors. 
• With Gothenburg Grand Central we are working to achieve “Breeam Outstanding”. It is an environmental certification that only about ten other buildings in Sweden live up to today. To succeed, we have optimized the materials in the building parts that affect the climate footprint the most, such as ECO-Concrete, recycled steel, glass, wooden columns and other materials. 
• The building will have several entrances and a station hall measuring around eight meters in height. 15,000 square meters will accommodate a mixed range of stations, services for travelers, shops, restaurants and businesses. The three upper office floors, which will be completed in the first half of 2027, will have space for around 700 workplaces spread over almost 8,000 square meters.
