Over 65 million people in China are currently under lockdown due to COVID-19.

Across the country, 33 cities, including seven provincial capitals, have more or less shut down, according to the Chinese newspaper Caixin.

In the city of Chengdu, the majority of the 21 million residents are not allowed to leave their homes due to a lockdown. However, for around a million people living in areas in the southern part of the city, the lockdown has now been lifted.

Virus outbreaks have been reported in over 100 cities in China, the highest number since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.

According to Chinese authorities, over 1,500 new corona cases were registered in the last 24 hours. The strict corona restrictions in China have severely affected the country's economy, travel and society in general. But according to China's ruling Communist Party, the measures are necessary to prevent a wider spread of the virus.
