This follows reports that a bid from British IAG was rejected.
British IAG, owner of the airline British Airways, among others, states in its interim report that it has held talks with Norwegian about a takeover. However, these are said to have collapsed and the information has caused Norwegian's shares to plummet by almost 9 percent during the afternoon.
The information is confirmed by Norwegian, which says it has rejected two bids from IAG.
A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that IAG, which in addition to British Airways also owns the Spanish Iberia, had purchased 4.6 percent of Norwegian, which sparked speculation about a takeover of the Norwegian airline and in turn significantly rising share prices.
For IAG shareholders, the interim report was positive reading as the company was able to benefit from positive currency effects and reported 75 percent better adjusted operating profit for the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
Adjusted operating profit came in at 280 million euros, significantly higher than analysts' forecast of 206 million euros.
