Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr believes that there are still too many airlines in Europe and expects the company to be involved in the consolidation.

Carsten Spohr notes that six airlines have gone bankrupt in recent months alone, but still believes that there are too many players in the market.

”"It is clear that consolidation will continue and we see Lufthansa as part of that. The most likely outcome is that there will be three large European airline networks, or airline groups, plus one or two low-cost players," Carsten Spohr said, according to Reuters.

Lufthansa has been heavily involved in the sector's merger and acquisition activity. The company bought Brussels Airlines and parts of bankrupt Air Berlin last year, among other things. Lufthansa has also been identified as a possible speculator in SAS on several occasions.
