Night train services to upper Norrland and Jämtland have been secured for four more years. The Swedish Transport Administration has now decided which operators will operate the Stockholm–Narvik and Stockholm–Duved train routes in the years 2020–2024. SJ will continue as operator on the latter route, while the Stockholm-Narvik route has been awarded to Vy Tåg AB, which is part of the Norwegian Vygruppen and is owned by the Norwegian state, according to a press release.

The Stockholm–Luleå–Narvik route has been operated by SJ since 2008. The fact that it is now being transferred to another operator affects the company's operations in several locations.

In total, this involves just over 500,000 passenger journeys per year, which as of December 13, 2020 will be operated by Vy Tåg, which in addition to the night trains between Stockholm and Narvik will also take over the daytime traffic between Luleå and Narvik.

”"This will affect SJ's operations in Luleå, Umeå, Gävle and Sundsvall. It is too early to say how the operations will be affected," SJ writes in a press release.

At the same time, the company announces that it will take over responsibility for the Storlien–Trondheim traffic from this summer.
