The Danish Piste Group, which owns the ski travel agencies Nortlander, Slopetrotter and Danski, is going bankrupt. According to a press release from the company, management is "working intensively on a reconstruction to continue the business.".
With a turnover of 700 million Danish kronor, equivalent to 956 million kronor, and 85,000 ski tourists annually, Piste Group was the largest ski tour operator in Denmark.
After a spring of restrictions that have closed ski destinations throughout Europe, the group's revenues have been significantly affected, says chairman and co-owner Casper Lykke Pedersen in a press release.
”The Corona crisis has closed ski destinations across Europe and has thus removed the market for ski trips and the company's finances cannot be stretched any further,” he says.
During the crisis, the company has cut costs and laid off staff in an attempt to save the group's companies, without success. The management is now working on a reconstruction to be able to continue operating until the market starts up again, according to Casper Lykke Pedersen.
In Europe, further shutdowns may await this winter. On Thursday, the BBC that Germany is trying to negotiate an agreement with EU countries to keep ski resorts throughout the Union closed until early January to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
