Last year was tough for the hospitality industry and many other industries. In 2020, home and away sales didn't really reach Norrbotten.
In total, there were 36 % fewer Swedish tourists visiting the county. This year things look better.
It is too early to see exactly what the figures will look like this year, but according to Annika Fredriksson, the booking situation for trains, flights and rental cars up to Norrbotten has been good.
But Norwegian tourists are an important source of income during the summer, and this year there are not many of them due to the restrictions.

Tourism is a complex network to calculate results from.
– The tourism industry is a network economy that includes about five different categories, says the vice president of Swedish Lapland, Annika Fredriksson.
- Stay
- Eat
- Do
- Trip
- Act
But even within those categories there are nuances.
– You can choose to stay in a hotel, and choose to go to a restaurant, says Annika Fredriksson. Or you live in a self-catering cottage, and then you become a bigger consumer at Coop or Ica. Or you live in a camper or tent.
And nature tourism seems to be the form of tourism that is recovering the fastest, she says.
Annnika Fredriksson herself has chosen to try a homestay just a few miles from home. She and her family have checked into a hotel that actually caters to American and Asian tourists during the winter with an exclusive package.
