Japan's two largest airlines, ANA Holdings and Japan Airlines, are canceling flights to Europe on Thursday.
These include both passenger planes and cargo flights, which normally take the route over Russia. The reason is said to be the security situation.
The companies are considering alternative flight routes, such as over Alaska.
Japan is not on the list of 36 countries that Russia has banned from its airspace.
