The government decided on Sunday to advise against all travel to Russia.

The reason is the unpredictable security situation, deteriorating opportunities to travel out of Russia, and uncertainty regarding payment systems in the country.

”Given the serious and unpredictable security situation in the wider region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has today decided to advise against all travel to Russia. The advisory applies until further notice,” writes Minister for Foreign Affairs Ann Linde on Twitter.

Air traffic to and from Russia has largely been suspended, making it difficult to find transport options for those wishing to leave the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) writes in a press release.

There is also increasing uncertainty about payment systems in Russia, which could make it more difficult to pay with foreign payment cards and withdraw cash from ATMs in the country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The measure is a tightening of the previous recommendation. On February 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued advice against non-essential travel to Russia until further notice.

Next step on the scale, the final level that can be reached, is that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against all travel and urges Swedes to leave the country, the ministry writes.

Such a recommendation is only made in situations where there is ”imminent danger due to conflict or other serious threats”.
