The government is investing 900 million SEK in a new base for Sweden's cyber defense in a package to strengthen the country's digital resilience.
Vulnerability in society is increasing, says Minister of Financial Markets Max Elger (S) at a press conference.
Digitalization and the risks of shortcomings in it, combined with a more turbulent environment, means that the government wants to invest in cybersecurity.
The most concrete part of the package of measures concerns the national cybersecurity center, which is still under construction, being given its own premises in Solna instead of being based out of MSB's offices as they have done so far.
The new premises acquired by the Swedish National Defence Agency for SEK 900 million, the agency will renovate the premises before they can become the starting point for the national cybersecurity center. 2025 is set as the date for when everything can be completed.
The National Cyber Security Center is currently a collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Radio Agency (FRA), the Swedish Security Service and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). A previous goal was for the center to be completed in 2023.
”"There was a goal that we would be fully functional by 2023. We are already in operation today, and we continue to develop that operation. It will be evaluated in 2023," says Therese Naess, director of the center, adding: "The new premises will enable greater collaboration, which is in the longer term goal."”
In its investment in digital security, the government is also giving the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority two assignments: firstly to clarify overall how they have strengthened their cyber supervision, but also specifically to "increase control over the outsourced operations of financial companies".
MSB is also given a mission, namely to strengthen Cert-se, which is the national function for managing and preventing IT incidents.
