Global demand for commercial air travel is expected to fully recover in 2023 – and even exceed pre-COVID demand, according to the UN aviation agency ICAO.
ICAO expects that demand for most routes in the first quarter of 2023 will be at the same levels as in the corresponding period in 2019, and that demand in the end of 2023 will exceed 2019 demand by 3 percent. In 2024, global demand for air travel is expected to increase by 4 percent more than in 2019.
The forecast comes at a time when leading aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus have noted a significant increase in aircraft orders.
In 2022, the total number of air travelers worldwide amounted to 74 percent of the annual figure in the year before the pandemic broke out in 2020.
On Tuesday, Swedavia released statistics showing that 2.1 million passengers traveled via one of Swedavia's ten airports in Sweden during the first month of the year. The figure represents an increase of 90 percent compared to the same period last year, and is now at 75 percent of the pandemic-free 2019 level.
