Visit Sweden, in collaboration with Sweden's 21 regions, has compiled a summary of new visitor destinations and experiences in Sweden during spring and summer 2023. Wilderness roads, unique accommodations, gastronomic weekends, folk music festivals, cultural festivals, international art exhibitions, long-awaited music performances, and not least, anniversaries, are just a few examples that will brighten the range of tourist destinations in 2023.

Swedes' interest in discovering and holidaying in Sweden continues! With the lockdowns and restrictions of the pandemic years fresh in memory, many are looking forward to finally travelling again. Searches for foreign destinations have increased, but Swedes' interest in holiday experiences within Sweden remains higher than before the pandemic (1) and according to Oxford Economics, the Swedish tourism industry is expected to grow by six percent in the coming years compared to 2022. And for those planning to discover, experience and explore Sweden in 2023, the range of new destinations and experiences is enormous.

– It is incredibly pleasing to be able to present parts of the summer Sweden's enormous offering and to see how Sweden strengthens its attractiveness through an offering that attracts precisely the right target audiences while more people appear to value more affordable holiday experiences, says Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden.

Spending time in scenic surroundings, where there are opportunities for both physical activity and mental relaxation, is a valued holiday option for many! The hiking and cycling trends are two of the fastest-growing trends within nature tourism, and today, options are available for those who prioritise comfort as well as those who prefer simpler excursions. How about a mountain bike camp for the whole family? A sauna 80 metres underground? Or a mountain marathon where you can enjoy Jämtland delicacies at the food stations? 2023 offers a host of new nature experiences that promise the joy of discovery and freedom for all tastes.

For those who enjoy visiting art exhibitions, design events, and cultural festivals, the offerings are plentiful. During spring and summer, Sweden hosts a range of highly anticipated exhibitions celebrating both international street art stars and national photography and textile artists. Why not visit a photography exhibition featuring a group of warmly portrayed elderly ladies, marvel at modern glass art, or discover the history behind some of Sweden's most classic and beloved furniture manufacturers!

And what about celebrating both an artist's and a festival's anniversary with a 30-year-old rock veteran or an opera singer celebrating 30 years on stage? Or discovering tradition and history through folk musicians offering both log dancing and campfire playing. For those who want to create memories with music, a packed programme of performances in a variety of genres and themes is on offer.

The perfect accommodation can make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable experience. And gastronomic experiences are considered one of the favourite holiday activities for us Swedes. In 2023, several new accommodations and restaurants will open in Sweden – there is something for everyone – whether you are looking for budget-friendly B&Bs, luxury hotels, award-winning cheeses at a local dairy, or a fika walk in a jubilee city.

Finally, it can be stated that 2023 will be a year of jubilee celebrations! We are celebrating the 500th anniversary of Gustav Vasa's election as King of Sweden, Gothenburg is celebrating 400 years as a city, His Majesty the King's 50 years on the throne, and we are also acknowledging and celebrating everything from architectural masterpieces and cultural institutions to hiking trails, music festivals, and furniture manufacturers.

In other words, the year presents the opportunity to truly experience the sweep of history as we celebrate exciting and important milestones.
