New measures are to be developed to strengthen safety on trains and public transport. The responsible minister urges travellers to be vigilant.

”My tip in this very serious situation is not to sit with headphones on,” says Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson (KD).

The Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Transport Agency have been tasked by the government to develop measures to strengthen safety and security in rail and public transport.

The message comes after the Security Service last week raised the terror threat level from a three to a four.

”In the transport sector, it is a given starting point that travellers should feel safe when travelling by public transport,” says Minister for Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson (KD) at a press conference.

At the end of July, the government tasked 15 agencies with developing and intensifying security efforts in light of the increased threat![.

On Monday morning, Carlson had a meeting with the management of the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Transport Agency, two authorities where the security level is already high.

The authorities are now being given further tasks related to the security of train and public transport.

Proposals for a national programme for the protection of railways and public transport shall be drawn up. The authorities shall also consider what requirements may need to be imposed on railway companies and infrastructure and station managers.

”What concrete security measures it could involve remains to be seen,” according to Carlson.

But for example, in Great Britain, there are requirements for managers on station premises to control their staff and train their staff. For example, café staff, he says.

Carlson is urging the public to live their lives as usual, but with a greater degree of vigilance. Things that deviate from the norm on public transport should be reported immediately, says the minister. He urges travellers to be vigilant of what is happening around them.

”My tip in this very serious situation is not to sit with headphones on.”

The assignment must be reported no later than 31 January 2024.
