The state-owned Finnish railway company VR is acquiring MTRX, which operates passenger trains between Stockholm and Gothenburg, according to a press release.
MTRX, which is part of the Hong Kong-based transport company MTR, has operated commercial traffic between Stockholm and Gothenburg since 2015. The company, which had a turnover of approximately SEK 350 million in 2022 and has 120 employees, is now being acquired by VR, which is owned by the Finnish state.
”"I believe that together we can create even better services for train passengers in the Nordic region. The acquisition also strengthens our competitiveness in both Sweden and Finland," says VR's CEO Elisa Markula in a press release.
VR expanded its operations to Sweden in the summer of 2022 by acquiring Arriva, which operates in regional public transport.
MTR has long been responsible for commuter train and subway traffic in Stockholm. Last fall However, the Greater Stockholm local transport broke the commuter train agreement and last month it became known that MTR also gains renewed confidence to be responsible for subway traffic.
