SJ is unique in that the more people who travel with us, the better it is for the climate. And happily, more and more people are choosing the train. In order to welcome more people on board and contribute to the development of our society, we invest heavily in existing and new trains and in our employees. SJ has and will continue to play an important role in contributing to growth and achieving climate goals. We have offers that appeal to everyone, regardless of who you are and whether you are traveling privately, commuting to work or studies or on a business trip. Enjoy the scenery outside and use the time on board to socialize, work, study or rest.

Important events

Travel with SJ increased Travel with SJ increased by 6 percent compared to the previous year. SJ was able to release tickets with better advance notice as the Swedish Transport Administration's planning process improved.

Cancelled departures at the end of the year

Departures were cancelled in December due to a shortage of vehicles. The reasons were partly snow and cold, and partly that parts of the X 2000 fleet needed to undergo an inspection as an extra safety measure after an X 2000 train suffered serious wheel damage. In order to be better equipped for the coming winters, SJ has several short- and long-term measures underway. The most important is to increase maintenance capacity.

Damaged embankment led to derailment

An SJ train derailed on the Iggesund-Hudiksvall route after the embankment was severely damaged due to heavy rainfall during storm Hans. The derailment caused damage to infrastructure and vehicles, and a few passengers were slightly injured.

SJ took over commuter train services in the Stockholm area in March 2024

In November 2023, the Stockholm Transport Administration signed an agreement with SJ AB to take over commuter train services in the Stockholm area on March 3, 2024. At the end of the year, intensive work was underway at SJ with preparations for the takeover.

Several new agreements within procured traffic

SJ Götalandståg and Västtrafik agreed on an additional option year, which means that SJ is responsible for operating the Västtågen until December 2027. SJ AB signed an agreement regarding the Krösatågen, which means that SJ is responsible for the traffic until December 2033. SJ has operated the Krösatågen on an interim agreement since December 2021.

Financing the new high-speed trains

SJ AB signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a loan facility of SEK 1.75 billion to finance the high-speed trains that SJ AB had previously agreed upon.

Long-term, strategic goals for SJ

In 2023, SJ decided on four long-term, strategic goals for sustainable value creation to be achieved by 2030. The goals aim to offer the market's most customer-friendly journeys with the least climate impact to contribute to a long-term sustainable transport supply.
