German airline giant Lufthansa and the union representing ground staff have reached an agreement on a pay deal after a protracted dispute, the parties announced on Wednesday.
This averts the threat of strikes over the Easter weekend. The announcement comes after ground staff had for months organised walkouts which led to extensive disruptions to air traffic.
The parties have been negotiating behind closed doors since Monday, according to German newspaper Die Welt. If no agreement is reached, Verdi threatened an indefinite strike.
Among other things, Verdi has demanded higher hourly wages and better conditions for overtime. The details of the agreement have not yet been announced.
Lufthansa's cabin staff – who also went on strike earlier in March – have still not reached an agreement on a pay deal with the airline. According to German news outlet Der Spiegel, mediation between the trade union Ufo and Lufthansa is set to begin after Easter.
