The embassy in Tokyo will be rebuilt and developed. The government has decided on an investment framework of 925 million kronor.

– "It is one of Sweden's iconic buildings abroad and it is located in a very nice and vibrant area. But it requires extensive work, which we can now carry out when the government has allocated funds," says Max Elger, Director General of SFV.

In 2019, the government decided on design and preparatory work, a work that has now been completed. The government has now decided on implementation. The project includes renovation of the entire embassy complex. All technical installations are being replaced and several of the building's floors are being completely or partially rebuilt to enable rental to multiple tenants and to adapt to new uses. The project also includes tenant adaptations, upgrades and a review of accessibility, fire safety and security.

The renovation work is currently being procured and is planned to begin around the turn of the year. The building is expected to be handed over to the tenants during the first quarter of 2028.
