New Zeeland will start charging foreign tourists up to NZ$40 (US$230) for visiting the country's most popular tourist destinations. In a speech on Saturday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the revenue, estimated at NZ$62 million annually (US$353 million), would be reinvested in the destinations. Luxon also said he had heard that foreign visitors "are shocked that they can visit some of the most beautiful places in the world for free." "It's only fair that foreign visitors to these places pay an additional fee," continued Christopher Luxon. The attractions that will be subject to charges are Cathedral Cove, Tongariro Crossing, Milford Track and Mount Cook, where 80 percent of visitors are foreign tourists. New Zealanders will continue to be able to visit the sites for free.
