Thousands of tourists have flocked to the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland in recent days. The reason is a volcano that erupted last Friday, writes Reuters.
The volcano, which is expected to continue spewing lava, is now believed to become a permanent tourist attraction.
“It’s a perfect tourist eruption. But with the caveat, don’t go too close,” Thorvaldur Thordarson, a volcanology professor at the University of Iceland, told Reuters.
Guards have begun patrolling the area around the volcano to ensure that visitors do not get too close.
How long the volcano is expected to be active is unclear.
“It could end tomorrow or it could still be going on for a few decades,” he says.
