Passenger train services between Finland and Sweden are back in operation after a 38-year break

The first train to Sweden left Oulu, Finland, at 5 a.m. on Monday morning. A little over an hour and 40 minutes later, the train arrived in Haparanda, Yle.fi reports.

On the Swedish side, Norrtåg is responsible for the traffic and on the Finnish side, it is operated by VR. The Oulu-Haparanda route also stops in Kemi and Tornio.

”"By connecting Swedish and Finnish train traffic, we create new opportunities for people to travel, work, study and visit each other across the border," says Joakim Berg, CEO of Norrtåg to jarnvagar.nu.

During the autumn, traffic will be expanded to 14 trips per week in each direction.

The last time it was possible to travel by train between Finland and Sweden was in 1988.
