China's decision to drop its zero-COVID policy and open its borders has caused travel at Hong Kong Airport to skyrocket.

During January, 2.1 million travelers passed through the airport, an increase of around 2,900 percent compared to the same month the previous year.

The Chinese New Year is also believed to have contributed to the large increase, as well as a campaign from Hong Kong to attract tourists back, which includes half a million free flights during the year.

The largest increase was in travel between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia and Japan.

Hong Kong has also begun to ease its pandemic restrictions, with the only remaining requirement being the wearing of face masks. In early February, the testing requirement was lifted, among other things.

Before the pandemic, Hong Kong was Asia's largest airport by passenger numbers. So far, only a third of the passengers have returned compared to before the pandemic.
