And there's more snow on the way.
– The snowfall will begin to subside on Tuesday evening, but then increase again during the late night and early morning. This mainly affects Södermanland and Stockholm counties and to some extent Gävleborg, says Charlotta Eriksson, meteorologist at SMHI.
Tuesday brought severe weather in many parts of the country. And SMHI had issued several warnings for, among other things, snowfall and strong winds.
– Many of the wind warnings have been removed because it has calmed down, the ones that remain are mainly in the north. This is for Västernorrland and the Lapland mountains, but there it is also expected to calm down during the night, says Charlotta Eriksson.
Number of accidents
A number of traffic accidents occurred in Örebro County, Dalarna and Värmland.
– There have been single accidents and minor collisions. I have not heard anything about anyone being seriously injured, says Mats Öhman, press spokesperson for the Bergslagen regional police.
In southern Sweden, many accidents occurred during the morning and afternoon. These included skids, cars that overturned, cars that crashed into wire barriers, cars that collided with a truck, and in Ronneby, a bus collided with a car.
Even in western Sweden, road conditions were difficult.
– We have had a number of accidents around the region, but fortunately we have no reports right now of more serious injuries, says Peter Adlersson, press spokesperson for the police in Region West.
In Värmland, the snowfall led to school transport in Grums and Kil being cancelled during the day. And in Karlstad, the municipality closed a sports hall because there was so much snow on the roof.
Stop in train traffic
Fallen trees damaged a catenary, causing a halt in train traffic on the Råå Line between Teckomatorp and Ramlösa. During the evening, traffic was expected to run as normal, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
For example, the storm also led to the ferry traffic on Tynningöleden in Stockholm County being closed for a few hours.
Air traffic was also affected by the harsh weather, with several airports in Sweden experiencing extensive disruptions during the morning. One of the hardest-hit airports was Ronneby, where traffic was halted for an hour during the morning due to heavy snow. Arlanda Airport was also forced to cancel departures within Sweden.
Heavy snowfall and strong winds also caused major traffic problems in Norway. The weather also halted some school activities in the municipality of Skien, where several schools closed due to the weather and power outages that hit the municipality, according to news agency NTB.
