This after employees at the airline rejected a proposal for a wage agreement.

The announcement worsens an already messy situation, where a wave of strikes among the company's French staff has cost the company around 300 million euros.

According to Janaillac, more than half of Air France employees rejected the proposal. Just over 80 percent chose to vote on the salary offer.

”I hope that my resignation will create a more sharp collective awareness,” says Janaillac.

Air France-KLM earlier on Friday lowered its profit and growth forecast for 2018, partly due to the effects strikes have had on the company.

Air France needs to reduce its costs to keep pace with its European competitors, such as British Airways and Lufthansa, something that its sister company KLM has succeeded in doing.

British Airways and Lufthansa, which have also been hit by a series of strikes in recent years, have already implemented extensive savings to better compete with low-cost carriers in Europe.
