Swedes' travel by air has increased significantly since the early 1990s.
Last year, emissions amounted to ten million tons of carbon dioxide, which is an increase of 47 percent, writes Dagens Nyheter, citing a new study from Chalmers University of Technology.
This is approximately the same amount that is emitted from Swedish passenger car traffic in a year.
The increase was greatest in the 1990s. Later, emissions per person have decreased by an average of 1.9 percent per year due to more modern aircraft that are filled with more passengers. Emissions have not increased significantly during the 2000s.
But as air travel continues to increase, emissions risk increasing. Swedes' flying is increasing by three percent per year.
– It is a challenge for the industry. The occupancy rate cannot be more than 100 percent, in the long run you need to find other ways to achieve a reduction. In relation to the fact that net emissions of greenhouse gases need to cease completely, it is a concern, says Chalmers researcher and report author Jörgen Larsson to DN.
