The home rental site Airbnb is canceling all bookings in the US capital, Washington, DC, during and around the presidential inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden.

The presidential inauguration will take place on January 20th.

”We hereby announce that Airbnb will be canceling reservations made in the city of Washington, D.C. during the installation week,” the company announced in a statement, adding that no new reservations during the current period will be accepted.

Several of the hardline supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who were part of the mob that attacked the Capitol last week rented homes through the site.

Airbnb's announcement should be seen against the backdrop of fears that new protests from those who believe Biden "stole" the victory in the presidential election will begin in connection with the installation.

The mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, is also urging people not to travel to the capital.

”We ask Americans not to come to Washington, DC to witness the 59th presidential inauguration on January 20. Instead, participate virtually,” she urges.
