Home rental site Airbnb agrees to pay 576 million euros, equivalent to almost 6.5 billion kronor, to the Italian tax authorities after a settlement.

Italian police seized more than 779 million euros from the company in early November. The seizure was ordered by prosecutors, who accused Airbnb of failing to pay a tax introduced in 2017 of 21 percent on the income that hosts receive from short-term rentals arranged through online companies.

The seized amount was based on an estimate that Italian homeowners received approximately €3.7 billion from such contracts between 2017 and 2021. By law, the rental site is obliged to collect and pay the tax.

Airbnb writes in a statement that the company will not require those who rented out their homes through the site during 2017-2021 to pay the tax afterwards.
