Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has received an order for 500 A320 aircraft, which is stated to be the largest single order in aviation history, according to Airbus.

The order-taker is the Indian airline Indigo, which, including the new order, would have a fleet of 1,330 Airbus aircraft and would thus become the largest Airbus owner in the world.

Airbus shares rise by 0.7 percent in Paris.

Indigo is the largest airline in India, whose aviation sector is the world's fastest growing, according to Christian Scherer, Airbus' chief commercial officer. Indigo's current Airbus fleet amounts to 264 Airbus aircraft but its order book amounts to 1,066 aircraft.

The previous record was held by another Indian company, Air India, which earlier this year placed an order for a total of 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
