Aircraft taking off and landing at Malmö Airport can now be controlled from Remote Tower Control, RTC, in Stockholm. Flight BRA27C from Braathens Regional Airlines was the first to take off from Malmö Airport today at 07.08 with the help of air traffic control from RTC.

In November 2017, Swedavia signed an agreement with LFV to enable remote air traffic control at four of Swedavia's airports from LFV's control center, RTC. The airports covered by the agreement were Kiruna Airport, Åre Östersund Airport, Umeå Airport and Malmö Airport.

Now that air traffic control at Malmö Airport has been connected to RTC Stockholm, all airports within the agreement can be controlled remotely.

– LFV was the first in the world to implement remote air traffic control. This provides increased opportunities to maintain a well-functioning air traffic service with high availability throughout the country. In this way, LFV contributes to Sweden achieving its transport policy goals, says Anna Granberg, Director of Operations at LFV.

To ensure a smooth transition, air traffic services will be provided alternately from both ATS Malmö Airport and RTC Stockholm for a period of time.

The project has been part-financed by the EU.

In collaboration with Swedish industry, LFV was the first in the world to introduce remote air traffic control, Remote Tower Service, RTS, in 2015. Today, several countries have developed and deployed similar solutions. This is a global development that is underway to streamline and develop air traffic services.

LFV's development of remote air traffic control

The vision of remote air traffic control was born at LFV in the mid-2000s. The goal was to be able to operate local air traffic control and use the technology according to the same principles as en route air traffic control. LFV is pioneering the work with remote air traffic control and has worked together with both the industry and the Swedish Transport Agency.
