Airlines around the world have borrowed over $17 billion, equivalent to nearly 170 billion kronor, during the month of March to strengthen their finances in the wake of the corona crisis, Bloomberg reports.

The American aviation giants have been the most active, borrowing a total of $12.5 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. 

Delta Airlines is the company that has borrowed the most, totaling $5.6 billion. This is followed by Singapore Airlines, which has secured a bridge loan of $4 billion, and United Airlines, which has borrowed $2.5 billion.

The aviation industry has previously requested government support measures, including in Germany, the USA and Sweden.

In total, companies from all industries worldwide have borrowed over $230 billion from commercial banks since the beginning of March, according to Bloomberg data.
