The American airline Delta is now facing harsh criticism after a campaign in which the company urged its employees not to join the union.
Buy a game console instead, was one of Delta's advice to staff.
”"Union dues cost about $700 a year. A new video game system with the latest hits sounds fun. Put your money on that instead of paying the union," read the message on one of Delta's information boards, according to the BBC.
The airline would not confirm to the BBC that it was behind the production of the information material, but a Delta spokesperson said the company had shared a lot of information that a decision to join the union was a matter that should be taken seriously.
IAM, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, organizes over 110,000 airline employees in the U.S. The union is currently trying to create union representation for the 44,000 employees at Delta.
”The day when Delta’s ramp workers and flight attendants can finally negotiate the wages, benefits and work rules they deserve is fast approaching, and it has Delta terrified,” IAM said in a statement.
Several politicians have also condemned Delta's personnel disclosures. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called the disclosures "a disgrace," while Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib described them as "an ugly attempt to break the union.".
