Craving airplane food but absolutely not ready to get on a plane during the coronavirus pandemic? That's what the airline Finnair hopes, as it has now started selling its meals in a grocery store.
The Finnish company, like its competitors, has been forced to reduce its workforce. To avoid further cuts, especially among employees working in catering, it is now trying a new idea. Dishes that are usually served in the business department are now on sale in a grocery store. For 12.90 euros, equivalent to about 130 kronor, customers can choose from steak with teriyaki sauce and char with chanterelle risotto, among other things.
According to Finnair, the concept has been a great success, with 1,600 meals sold in a store located near Helsinki Airport. The plan is now to expand to more stores.
In 2017, Finnair decided to take responsibility for its own in-flight meals after purchasing a company it had previously hired. Before the coronavirus pandemic, the kitchen was preparing 12,000 meals a day.
