The busiest travel period of the year is here. A large number of travellers are expected to pass through Stockholm Arlanda Airport during June, July and August, and the airport is offering a total of 17 new scheduled flight routes during the summer season.

I would like to warmly welcome everyone to Arlanda this summer. Both we at Swedavia and the airport's stakeholders are well-prepared and ready to receive all the expectant holidaymakers, says Arlanda Airport Director Karl Eklund.

"I want to encourage everyone to prepare for their journey by checking when we recommend you arrive at the airport and, once there, to head straight for a check-in machine to collect your baggage tag and also check in if you haven't already done so at home. By arriving at the airport at the recommended time and being well-prepared, you contribute to a smoother flow for everyone with shorter waiting times at both bag drop and security control," Karl Eklund continues.

Swedavia's general recommendation for when passengers should arrive at the airport before departure is 2.5–2 hours for those travelling within Europe. For those travelling outside of Europe, we recommend 3.5–3 hours before departure. On the homepage of Arlanda's website, there is also a tool where passengers can enter their flight number and receive a recommendation tailored to their specific departure.

However, keep in mind that a recommendation is just a recommendation. As a traveller, you are always personally responsible for keeping yourself updated via your airline about your specific flight, says Karl Eklund.

Once at the airport, travellers are asked to proceed directly to a check-in machine to retrieve their baggage tag. The more people who prepare for baggage drop by attaching the baggage tag to their suitcase, the shorter the waiting times will be for everyone when the bag is then handed in at Bag Drop. At the check-in machines, which are located in areas throughout the terminals and in SkyCity, it is also possible to check in for those who have not already done so at home, and to print boarding passes.

Once you have attached your baggage tag and left your bag at Bag Drop, it's time to go through security. Here it is particularly important to look at and follow the instructions on site, as they vary depending on which security checkpoint you are passing through. I would also like to recommend downloading Swedavia's app, where you can receive push notifications about your flight and explore our new commercial offerings here at Arlanda. Since last summer, we have opened the Marketplace in Terminal 5, Arlanda's biggest investment ever in an improved range of food, drink, and shopping. The offerings are continuously developing throughout the year, but I can already promise that last year's returning holidaymakers will be pleasantly surprised by all the new things at Arlanda, says Karl Eklund.

Airport Manager Karl Eklund's checklist for a smoother start to your summer holiday

Follow our recommendation on when to be at the airport before your departure. Swedavia's general basic recommendation for when you should be at the airport is 2.5–2 hours before your departure if you are travelling within Europe. For travel outside of Europe, it is recommended that you be there 3.5–3 hours before departure. On the homepage of Arlanda's website, there is also a new tool, When should I be at the airport?, where you as a traveller can enter your destination or flight number and receive a recommendation on when you should be at the airport, tailored to your specific departure.

Check in (if you haven't already done so digitally) and collect your baggage tags from a machine.

Leave your luggage at Bag drop. Once you have collected your luggage tags from one of our check-in machines, leave your bag(s) at Bag drop for airlines that offer the service. Don't forget to keep your baggage receipt.

Prepare for the security check. If you are travelling with hand luggage only and have checked in digitally, you are welcome to proceed directly to the security check. The rules in the new security check in Terminal 5 differ from other security checks at the airport, so please pay attention to which check you are going through and follow the instructions you receive in connection with the security check you will be passing through.

Keep track of your flight via Swedavia's app. By downloading SwedaviaThe app You can easily and smoothly keep track of your flight. Via the app, you can subscribe to information about your specific flight and receive ongoing updates about the terminal, waiting time at security, check-in desk, boarding time, and gate.
