On Monday, local authorities closed Sicily's Catania airport after ash rain from the Etna volcano that erupted yesterday evening, reports Republic.

The airport was supposed to open at 8:00 PM on Monday evening, but will now have to postpone the opening time until 6:00 AM tomorrow, Tuesday.

Arriving flights have been diverted to other airports on the island. The closure comes just days after the airport was allowed to reopen due to a fire in a terminal building in mid-July.

There is also a traffic ban for two-wheeled vehicles in Catania for at least two days. Bicycles, scooters and motorcycles are not allowed to travel after the road surface was covered in volcanic ash.
