American Airlines increases profit – shares rise in pre-trade

America's largest airline, American Airlines, rose nearly 5 percent in pre-trade after reporting increased profits in the fourth quarter.

Adjusted net income was $481 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $444 million, or $0.93 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 3.1 percent to $10.94 billion.

Low-cost competitor Southwest Airlines fared worse, reporting a fourth-quarter profit drop of 62.6 percent on Thursday.
