The American airline Jetblue has made a bid for Spirit Airlines for approximately $3.6 billion.

Spirit Airlines has previously had plans to merge with Frontier, a sector colleague among budget airlines. JetBlue has, according to information to the New York Times, made an offer of $33 per share in cash. This would represent a premium of about 40 percent.

Spirit Airlines shares are up 22.4 percent after the announcement. Jetblue is down 7.3 percent and Frontier is up 4 percent.
