It may become more expensive for tourists to visit Amsterdam in the future.
The Dutch capital is considering introducing a 20 percent tourist tax, according to The newspaper Het Parool.
This is evident from an agreement reached earlier this week between several parties in the city's city council.
– Tourism contributes to the city's economy, but at the same time puts significant pressure on public spaces, quality of life and municipal facilities, the parties write in a joint statement.
– The coalition has therefore decided to increase the tourist tax, so that visitors contribute more fairly to the costs that the city has for management, maintenance, supervision and investments in the quality of the local environment.
Amsterdam already has one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe at 12 percent.
