There is a risk that summer tourism will create a new wave of infections across Europe, Oxford Economics fears in an analysis.

”"While most EU members are managing to keep virus infections at low levels, recent weeks have pointed towards worrying peaks in southeastern Europe," the analysis house writes.

The infection numbers are clearly lower than they were in Italy in March, but despite everything, the wave of infections in countries like Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania is worrying. On the one hand, it could lead to new restrictions in these countries. However, the risk is that the restrictions are not strict enough during the tourist season, but that they need to be tougher at a later stage. Tourists who go to these countries or people from these countries who work seasonally elsewhere in Europe can spread the infection.

”"The risk of spread to the rest of Europe could force the reintroduction of protective measures, including border closures, which could threaten the emerging economic recovery," writes Oxford Economics.
