The vaccine study led by Astra Zeneca and Oxford University could result in a vaccine ready for distribution before Christmas, according to statements from Oxford's chief scientist Andrew Pollard, Sky News reports.
Andrew Pollard's comments were made before a committee in the British Parliament, where the Oxford chief specified that the results of the vaccine study look set to be ready before the end of the year.
”There is a small chance, but I don't know for sure yet,” he said.
The study is one of four major studies by pharmaceutical giants that have reached the final stages of vaccine development.
”"We are just one of the global players working hard right now, the others may also deliver final results before the end of the year, so the steps we need to take apply broadly to several different products," said Andrew Pollard, according to the news channel.
After the studies are complete, express approvals will be required from the world's health and drug authorities.
The American Pfizer and the German Biontech have a collaboration similar to Astra Zeneca and Oxford, and these two studies are the most advanced. The American company Moderna, which is partly owned by Astra Zeneca, also has a more advanced study.
