At least 28 people died when a tourist bus ran off the road in Madeira, Portuguese media report.
Most of the dead are reported to be German tourists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no information about injured Swedes.
”"I lack words to describe what has happened. I find it difficult to deal with the suffering that people have been subjected to," Filipe Sousa, mayor of Santa Cruz, told Reuters.
Pictures on Portuguese news sites show how the white tourist bus has driven down a slope in the coastal town of Caniço in southern Madeira, and how it has overturned and finally crashed into a house.
There were 55 people on board the bus, local news site Dnoticia reports. At least 28 of the people on board died in the accident. It is unclear whether people inside the house were injured.
The dead are 17 women and 11 men, Filipe Sousa said, according to the Spanish news agency Efe, citing Portuguese public service channel RTP3.
The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. local time when the driver lost control of the bus for an unknown reason. The driver and the tour guide were reportedly injured but survived.
Video clips from the incident show how the rescue services are at the scene of the accident, and how the injured are being taken away.
The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no information about injured Swedes.
